About GA2023

The 2023 WFO General Assembly will take place in Sun City Convention Center, near the city of Rustenburg, South Africa, from May 21 to 24, 2023.
The event is organised in collaboration with the WFO Members Southern African Agri Initiative (SAAI), African Farmers Association of South Africa (AFASA) and the Wildlife Ranching South Africa (WRSA).

This year’s theme is: “INVESTING IN FARMERS’ SOLUTIONS FOR RESILIENT FOOD SYSTEMS WITH A POSITIVE IMPACT ON NATURE”.

The WFO 2023 Annual Meeting will focus on the nexus between agriculture and nature, highlighting the critical role farmers and their local solutions on the ground can play to address the global challenges of transitioning to resilient Food Systems generating a tremendous and positive impact on the nature around us.

The #WFOGA2023 will bring farmers from all over the world on the stage together with high-level representatives of governments, private sector entities, research centres and academia, international organisations, and financial institutions to look for synergic responses leveraging farmers’ solutions.

For those who will not be able to attend in person, this year’s WFO General Assembly will simultaneously be broadcast online.

Andrea Porro, @worldfarmersorg, highlighted the importance of convergence with national farmers’ organizations, and called for their involvement in the design of innovation, policy, and financial tools.

Emphasizing that young farmers will be affected by decisions taken in boardrooms, Mawejji Harbert, Young Farmers' Federation of Uganda (UNFYA) and @worldfarmersorg, questioned how finance will reach farmers and said it must be accessible if we are to achieve a just transition.

Kati Partanen, @MTKry and @worldfarmersorg, highlighted the importance of national laws in creating obligations for climate action. She cited the potential for offering incentives such as premium prices to farmers who reduce carbon emissions and increase sequestration.

Family farmers produce over 80% of the world’s food based on value yet face disproportionate climate risks.

At a #COP29 side event, participants discussed ways to expand and structure climate finance to empower family farmers’ organizations.
