High-level Political Forum
The High-level Political Forum (HLPF) was established as a result of the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio+20), in 2013. It meets annually under the auspices of the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) with the aim of reviewing and monitoring the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
WFO has been actively engaged in the implementation process of the 2030 Agenda since its negotiation phase back in 2015. In fact, WFO acts as one of the Organizing Partners of the Farmers’ Major Group at the HLPF. The Major Groups, including the farmers Major Group, were established after the Earth Summit in 1992 as it became clear that achieving sustainable development would only be possible by involving all the stakeholders of the society. As Organizing Partner, WFO follows the process very closely, acting as the liaison between the world’s farmers and both with the United Nations and the other Major Groups and other Stakeholders Mechanism (MGoS) which gathers all civil society sectors.
WFO ensures that the farmers’ voice is always heard and that farmers’ representatives from all different regions of the world are provided with the opportunity of participating in official meetings where they can bring their expertise as well as their needs and challenges, with the aim of raising awareness on the huge potential of the agricultural sector in contributing to the achievement of all the 17 SDGs.
