Food Systems
“[The food system is] an interconnected web of activities, resources and people that extends across all domains involved in providing human nourishment and sustaining health, including production, processing, packaging, distribution, marketing, consumption and disposal of food. The organization of food systems reflects and responds to social, cultural, political, economic, health and environmental conditions and can be identified at multiple scales, from a household kitchen to a city, county, state or nation” .
It has been since 2019 that WFO has started building a position on Sustainable Food Systems, which ended up with the adoption of an institutional Policy adopted by the 2020 General Assembly. Throughout 2019 and 2020, WFO has been actively and preponderantly engaging the Food Systems Dialogue curated by Dr David Nabarro, including organizing a session during the 2019 General Assembly, in Luxembourg.
As a key contribution to the Decade of Action to deliver the Sustainable Development Goals, the United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres will convene a Food Systems Summit, in 2021. The Summit will have the aim of maximizing the co-benefits of a food systems approach across the entire 2030 Agenda and meet the challenges of climate change, the objectives of the Food Systems Summit are to generate momentum, expand the knowledge and share experience and approaches worldwide to help countries and stakeholders unleash the benefits of food systems for all people, including Farmers. To this extent, WFO is working closely with Dr Agnes Kalibata, Special Envoy for the 2021 Food Systems Summit and the Secretariat of the Summit to bring the Farmers’ voice at the table of negotiations for the Summit preparation and implementation.
