UN Decade of Family Farming (2019-2028)
The United Nations Decade of Family Farming 2019-2028 (UNDFF) was adopted by the UN General Assembly in December 2017. Based on the Global Action Plan that was launched in 2019, the UNDFF aims at raising awareness on the key role played by family farmers worldwide, as well as providing a framework to support the design and implementation of enabling policies for family farmers at all levels.
WFO as member of the International Steering Committee that was created to oversee the implementation of the Decade, is working hand in hand with FAO and IFAD, as well as other global and regional Farmers’ Organisations, to support the implementation of the UNDFF Action Plan. In this regard, for the past two years, promoting the important role of family farmers has been among the top priorities for WFO in all the policy processes it is involved in.
WFO is constantly in contact with its member organisations to concretely promote the family farmers’ needs and challenges different regions of the world. This allowed to collect various case studies on the multi-functional role of family farming, on how national farmers’ organisations can support and empower family farmers. Also, WFO is currently providing support to FAO and IFAD as they are working on a Modular Training Program on Public Policy Cycle for Family Farming, a capacity development tool for state and non-state actors to design, implement and monitor public policies for family farming.
