On July 14th (8:00 AM New York Time/2:00 PM Rome Time), the World Farmers’ Organisation and IFOAM – Organics International will be co-hosting the Farmers’ Major Group side event at the 2020 High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF 2020), featuring global and regional perspectives from farmers’ leaders.
Covid19 caused serious health and economic crisis, and lockdown measures are hugely impacting in many sectors. All actors of food systems globally are facing severe consequences (i.e. markets’ closure, food waste as farmers cannot harvest, isolation of rural areas, difficulties in inputs supply) with devastating effects on the livelihoods of farmers, especially small-scale ones in countries where agriculture is the main source of income. Yet still, farmers worldwide are keeping on doing their job to ensure urban and rural areas do not go food insecure, and everyone has access to healthy and nutritious food produced in a sustainable manner. The side event aims at showcasing how the global farming community is responding to this unprecedented crisis.
