On September 18th, 2019, within the framework of the FAO biennial theme 2020-2021 “Promoting healthy diets and preventing all forms of malnutrition”, the Government of Italy with the support from FAO hosted the first of a series of Mediterranean diet-related events aimed at deepening understanding of the Mediterranean diet and raising awareness on how it can help achieve the Sustainable Development Goals.
On behalf of the World Farmers’ Organisation (WFO), the Secretary-General, Arianna Giuliodori, didn’t miss the opportunity to take the floor and remind the audience the key role of farmers as producers of healthy food and nutrition value and stewards of local food habits, and traditions as well as biodiversity.
Speaking from the perspective of farmers, Arianna Giuliodori highlighted how important is that those who feed the planet daily are involved and participate in all relevant policy and research processes that relate to food security, nutrition and sustainable food systems.
